Ferronickel slag is a useful resource acquired through smelting of nickel ore and bituminous coal used in producing ferronickel at a high temperature before it was separated from ferronickel. Steel slag is environmentally friendly raw material with excellent physical and chemical properties and used as substitute for natural resources such as concrete aggregates, molding sand, abrasives, and serpentine while contributing to preserving resources and environment. The ferronickel slag has been used in diversified ways in advanced countries including Japan and New Caledonia in addition to Korea for a long time.

  • Acquired KS certification for concrete ferronickel slag fine aggregate (KS F 2790)
  • Acquired E-mark for roadbed ash and caisson fills

Ferronickel Slag

Ferronickel slag is classified into prime stones produced through natural air-cooling of smelting slag and prime sand made through rapid cooling based on sprayed water.

Prime Stone, Air-Cooled Slag

It is a product made in the form of a gravel through gradual cooling based on natural air-cooling of smelting slag. It boasts of excellent compaction rate at a time of being used as civil engineering aggregate.

UsageAggregates, roadbed ash, asphalt aggregate & substitutes for caisson fills

Prime Sand, Granulated Slag

It is a product made in the form of sand through spraying of water on to smelting slag.
As it has better properties than natural sand, it can be used as concrete sand.

UsageAggregate, substitutes for caisson fills, concrete aggregate, asphalt aggregate, electric furnace filler, molding sand & abrasives

Utilization of Slag

  • Concrete Aggregate Detailed View +

Prime Sand acquired KS F 2790 in order to be used as concrete aggregate, but high chemical stability and non-existence of alkali silica have no effect on concrete aging or steel corrosion. Prime Sand acquired KS F 2790 “Concrete Aggregate (KATS, 2009.10.30),” and high chemical stability and non-existence of alkali silica have no effect on concrete aging or steel corrosion. As specific gravity and measurement and weight by unit are higher than natural aggregate, it can be effectively used as concrete aggregates for maritime construction and basic construction.

  • Serpentine Substitutes Detailed View +

Prime Sand is similar to serpentine, natural rocks, in terms of component, and it does not contain asbestos in terms of crystal structure, so they are used as serpentine substitutes by POSCO and Hyundai Steel. Steel Mill in Japan also uses slag supplied from Pacific Metals Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation as serpentine substitutes.

  • Soft Ground Improvement (Bottom Ash)Detailed View +

As Prime Sand boasts of excellent bearing power, it is used as bottom ash in order to improve soft improvement. As it is similar to sand in terms of component, it can be used as back-fills at a time of laying water and sewage pipes. If slag is used in the understructure of plant sites, schoolyards and golf courses, drainable grounds can be established.
